Selection Criteria

To be eligible for the 2025 DAFI scholarship programme in Kazakhstan, you must: 

  • Have refugee status in Kazakhstan or be considered by UNHCR to be in need of international protection. 
  • Be younger than 28 years old when you begin your studies. (There may be exceptions to the age limit if you started your undergraduate studies in your home country but were forced to leave your studies due to seeking asylum in another country, or if you encountered special difficulties in accessing higher education programs due to certain circumstances, such as childcare responsibilities, raising children, disability, etc.). 
  • Have a certificate of secondary / secondary vocational education, and you can provide original documents confirming your education background. If you do not have the relevant documents, please contact UNHCR or the Red Crescent Society and explain your situation before applying. Specify the reason why you cannot provide the original certificate when applying. 
  • Have graduated from high school with above average results. 
  • Have a good command of the language of instruction for the undergraduate (secondary vocational education) program you wish to enter in Kazakhstan. 
  • Not be currently receiving a scholarship from another source. 
  • Need financial assistance to continue your studies. 
  • Be strongly motivated to participate in your community and Kazakhstan through your leadership, volunteering, community service, mentorship, community development, and etc. 

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

If you are selected for the DAFI Scholarship, your scholarship may be renewed each year for up to four years. This depends on: 

  • Attending classes regularly 
  • Passing your exams and completing each semester 
  • Keeping a good academic record 
  • Participating in DAFI programme activities (such as DAFI club and volunteering) 

At the start of each academic year, all DAFI scholars must sign a Scholarship Agreement. You are expected to study responsibly and inform UNHCR or the Kazakhstan Red Crescent Society if you face any problems during your studies. 

Please note: If you are found to be involved in academic fraud or misconduct, the scholarship will be stopped immediately. If you regularly miss classes or perform poorly, your scholarship may be stopped after review. 

Tuition fees and other education-related costs are paid directly to your university, based on your performance. A monthly allowance is paid directly to you. 

 


How to Apply

Before applying, you should decide: 

  • Which university or vocational school in Kazakhstan you want to attend 
  • What program you wish to study 
  • What the admission requirements are for that program 

Once ready, complete the online application form in English at DAFI Programme Management Platform webpage.

The call for applications usually opens in June. All updates and deadlines will be shared on the official UNHCR Central Asia website and through our partner – Red Crescent society. 

Your application must include all required documents. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

After you submit your application, UNHCR will review it. If your application meets the criteria, you may be invited for an interview. If selected, UNHCR will contact you and you will sign a Scholarship Agreement to start the scholarship.
